Oldmans Pass, Snow Outing, January 2004

In January 04, our troop ventured out of our traditional snow camping spot. This year, we camped up at Olmans pass in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The weather was perfect, not too cold, upper 20's and lots of fresh snow. Several snow caves were built and with success. Because of the fresh snow, and not a lot of base, it was hard to get down into packed snow, making it difficult to build a great cave. Several boys, bailed on their caves, and set up tent. (A smart move). Over the day, we got about 4-6 inches of snow. Through the night, we accumulated close to 10 inches. That's a lot of snow, but everyone's shelter and tent withstood.

Most of the boys traveled down the road a bit to a sledding hill where they spent time sledding and snow boarding. A lot of fun for sure!

It was a great outing, and I think we will probably go back to the same place next year.
