On January 26th and 27th, fourteen boys and seven adults from our troop spent the night up on Mt. Hood at the White River recreation area. There was huge amounts of snow, close to 180 inches and we had about 12 inches overnight.
We had a successful weekend, with just a few minor surprises; like there was SO much snow, it was hard to dig deep enough to get to a solid base, and consequently, we had several caves “cave” in. But being the prepared and industrious scouts that we are, we quickly converted them to either trench’s or tent pads with snow walls around them. Several did bail early morning with roofs dropping down, but no one was really any worse for the wear.
When we woke at about 7:00 am Sunday, it was snowing pretty hard, and we decided to bag the breakfast cooking tradition, pack up and head to the Huckleberry Inn and have a meal cooked FOR us. That was fun. (Don’t get use to it).
The boys and adults did great, we all had a good time, and are looking forward to our next outing in February, up at Baldwin.
